After a hard day at university or work, watch a film with fellow students or colleagues and relax at the end of the day - our cinema evenings are a great way to do this. For licence reasons, we can't reveal the titles, but we can give you a few hints.

Under the label "Science Cinema", the student health management Campus in Balance in cooperation with the UniKino has prepared two film screenings followed by a discussion.

On 12 May, an animated special on the topic of emotions will be shown, followed by a panel discussion. In the second part of the production by Disney and Pixar, joy, anger and sadness will take centre stage alongside the main human characters. With the participation of experts from Bielefeld University, all who are interested are cordially invited to take part in the subsequent panel discussion! We would like to talk to you about emotions, procrastination and mental health during your studies. Admission is free. more information

On 12 June, you can look forward to a special on the topic of self-esteem followed by a panel discussion. The film is a German production directed by Karoline Herfurth, who was also in front of the camera herself. In the feature film, five women of different ages are accompanied in their struggles with their self-image, self-optimisation and external demands. With the participation of experts from Bielefeld University, all who are interested are cordially invited to take part in the subsequent panel discussion! We would like to exchange views with you on the topics of self-image, social pressure and images of women*. Admission is free.

The finale will take place on 3 July with an open-air cinema evening featuring a full-length blockbuster. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone - and there will be a lot of singing and dancing.

There are a few important things you should pack for a successful picnic in the greenery. Here is a small list to help you:

1. Blanket: A large, comfortable picnic blanket that you can sit on.
2. Food: Snacks such as sandwiches, fruit, cheese, crackers or salads. Don't forget to bring something sweet too!
3. Drinks: Water, juice or perhaps a few soft drinks. A cool box can help keep everything fresh.
4. Crockery: plates, cutlery, glasses or cups and napkins. Disposable products are practical, but reusable options are more environmentally friendly.
5. Bin liners: So that you can take your rubbish back with you and keep nature clean.
6. Sun protection: Sun cream, hats or umbrellas to protect you from the sun.

With these things, you are well prepared for a relaxed and happy picnic in the countryside! Have fun!

21.05.2025, 26.06.2025, 17.07.2025 12.00-13.30 each day, Soziales Feld

Relax, exchange ideas and make new contacts outdoors in good weather at the communal lunch picnic on the meadow at the Soziales Feld. The Houbi-Aktivmobil provides fun and exercise, the campus radio station Hertz 87.9 entertainment with a live broadcast from the lawn. Coffee, ice cream and cake will also be provided: the coffee bike and the ice cream van from Eiszeit will also be on site and Students for Future Bielefeld will be offering a waffle and cake stand.

On 27 May, the nationwide Diversity Day will take place for the 14th time under the motto "When diversity wins, Germany wins". The day of action, which is initiated by the Charta der Vielfalt e.V., takes place in companies and institutions throughout Germany. To this end, the information stands of the Diversity Department and NEOLAiA will be available on Tuesday, 27 May, between 10:00 and 14:00 in the UHG main hall. There will be nice talks, an interesting diversity quiz about the university (with nice prizes!) and plenty of information material. We look forward to seeing you there!

17.06.2025, 18.00-20.30, X-E0-001

organised by the Centre for Aesthetics and the university group "understand ukraine"

On two dates during the Ukrainian Film Days there will be the opportunity to engage with the country on a cinematic level.

On 5th June, the film "Us, Our Pets and the War" will be shown, which deals with animal rescue operations: In the midst of violence and war, Ukrainian citizens join forces to rescue animals left behind by people forced to flee. From cats and dogs in abandoned buildings to lions and tigers in the country's zoos, extraordinary rescue efforts are underway to bring them to safety. This evening's guest will be philosopher Ralph Stoecker, who will be on hand for a discussion afterwards. More information

On 17th June, the programme continues with "Slovo House. Unfinished novel": In the 1920s, a colourful mixture of chain-smoking artists, poets and playwrights lived in the "Slovo House" in Ukraine. Although the building was erected with Stalin's approval, it soon turned into a prison when the brutal Soviet regime spied on the residents and destroyed their eccentric lifestyle. This fascinating film explores the extraordinary history of the building and its inhabitants. The actor Andrii Mai will be present on this evening as a guest for a subsequent discussion. Sally Lisa Starken comes to Bielefeld University and reads from her book "Zu Besuch am rechten Rand - Warum Menschen AfD wählen"

Why do people vote AfD? To investigate this question, Sally Lisa Starken spoke to them, AfD voters from all over Germany.

The AfD: a party that is categorised by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution as being right-wing extremist in parts and at the same time receives an influx of voters. But what are the reasons why people vote for the AfD? What hope do they associate with it for their own future? And above all: how can other parties and discourse offerings still reach the people who feel addressed by it? These questions are now more important than ever.

Podcaster, journalist and content creator Sally Lisa Starken went on a journey through Germany for her book and spoke to people who are voting for the AfD: at election rallies, in marketplaces, in cafes - to understand what drives them, what moves them, what the realities of their lives are like and why they are hoping for answers from this party. She listens and sheds light on where exactly the democratic forces have lost touch, reports on her own personal experiences from her environment and categorises them together with experts.

If you haven't read the book yet, that's not a problem. You will also have the opportunity to purchase one on site, as the Bielefeld bookshop Mondo is supporting us with a book stand.

Admission is free

Campus guided tours, 07.05.2025, 05.06.2025

07.05.2025, 05.06.2025, each from 15.00 hrs.

organised by the Sustainability Office,

Registration at: nachhaltigkeitsbuero@uni-bielefeld.de

Get to know the campus from a different perspective - this opportunity is available on several dates during the guided themed campus tours.

On 7 May 2025 with a guided tour on sustainability in construction: What construction work is currently taking place around the main building? Which sustainability aspects are being taken into account in the construction measures? On a one-hour tour of the campus, the Facility Management department will provide information about the latest construction sites on campus, sustainable criteria for selecting materials and energy efficiency measures. Find out which buildings use renewable energy and discover aspects of sustainability that are only recognisable at second glance. Your questions are of course very welcome.

On 5 June 2025, there will then be an insight into the "university bees": Have you ever heard it buzzing on the university campus? If not, it's high time you did. There are currently around ten bee colonies on the outdoor biology grounds. On this campus tour, Nils Hasenbein, Student Affairs Officer at the Faculty of Biology, will give you an insight into the life of the university bees and their use in teaching and research. It's not just about beekeeping and honey: the orientation services, collection and pollination activities as well as the social and reproductive behaviour of bees in particular provide plenty of material for exciting discussions.

Notes:

In the event of heavy rain or bad weather, the tour will unfortunately have to be postponed.

The number of participants is limited, so please register as soon as possible.

In order to get an impression of your level of knowledge, it would be helpful for us if you could assign yourself to a status group (students, employees, scientific staff) when registering. Thank you very much!

The six-day festival "ThinkFeelAct - A Future Festival for Planetary Justice" is dedicated to the question of how we can think, feel and act in a planetary way. The preparation of the festival and thus the festival itself is conceived as an open project.

  • What characterises the socio-ecological present and what can planetary futures look like?
  • How is education for planetary futures organised?
  • What knowledge, what sensitivity and what capacity for action form the basis for planetary (co-)living?

These and other questions will be explored during the festival. Further information can be found here.

On the afternoon of the Sustainability Day, the Sustainability Award ceremony of Bielefeld University will take place from 16:00 to 18:00 in Lecture Hall H5. This prize honours outstanding theses that have made a special contribution to sustainability at the university.

The award ceremony will be accompanied by a lecture by Verónica Zuccarelli Freire from the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology on the topic "Not all that glitters is green: rethinking the energy transition through ancestral Indigenous ecologies and environmental justice in the Andes". The lecture will shed light on the importance of indigenous management methods and the Andean principle of reciprocity for ecological sustainability in the context of increasing exploitation of raw materials.
